Primary Phase
Designed by Jenny Okoye whilst working with
South Gloucestershire Council
A new all though EBD special school developed over split sites. The primary phase was constructed on the former site of Courtney Primary School and involved demolition of the substantial 1930s former school building.
The site is very constrained, split over three levels, and was designed with further expansion in mind.
Working closely with the Landscape Architect, the building is conceived as a low impact backdrop enclosing a series of outdoor ‘rooms’.
These outdoor spaces connect the classrooms and therapy suite within, providing an intimate, secure and calmng environment that supports attachment and learning.

Bristol Cathedral Choir School
Primary Phase
Designed by Jenny Okoye whilst working with
Coda Architects
When the fledgling primary school adjacent to Bristol Cathedral needed space to grow, a bold initiative was undertaken through partnership between Bristol Cathedral Schools Trust, Bristol City Council and the Department for Education to repurpose the rather delapidated and under utilised spaces on the lowest two storeys of Charles Holden’s Grade I listed Bristol Central Libray.
Coda Architects worked with Kier Western to develop the scheme from Stage 3 to completion.
Jenny Okoye developed the new build element for the Entrance Pavilion which leads visitors to a first floor gallery overlooking the dramatic double height, top lit space of the new school hall.
The pavilion is constructed of ashlar Bath stone from the Hortham Quarry where the stones for the libray originated. Zinc coated stainless steel cladding steps up from the low canopy, introducing light and views of the impressive original stone mullioned fenestration. The spine wall was prepared to receive a mural.
